European Media Highlight Türkiye’s Role in Historic Deal Between Somalia and Ethiopia

European media outlets are increasingly focusing on the pivotal role played by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in brokering a landmark agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia, aimed at resolving longstanding disputes. The deal, hailed as a significant diplomatic breakthrough, marks a new chapter in the relations between the two East African nations and underscores Türkiye’s growing influence in the region.

The agreement, which addresses critical issues like border disputes and security cooperation, was facilitated by Türkiye, which has been steadily increasing its diplomatic presence in Africa in recent years. Erdoğan’s involvement is seen as a strategic move to bolster Türkiye’s influence in the Horn of Africa and expand its role as a peacebroker in international conflicts. European analysts have lauded Erdoğan’s ability to navigate complex regional dynamics and bring Somalia and Ethiopia to the negotiating table, showcasing Türkiye’s expanding foreign policy footprint.

For decades, Somalia and Ethiopia have faced strained relations due to territorial disagreements, ethnic tensions, and their roles in regional security matters. The new agreement lays out a framework for resolving these disputes, including a commitment to defining borders, enhancing economic ties, and fostering cooperation in counterterrorism efforts. Both nations have expressed a willingness to move past their differences and prioritize peace and regional stability.

The deal is seen as a significant victory not just for Somalia and Ethiopia, but for Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts in Africa. As European media highlight, Türkiye’s involvement signals a shift in global influence, with emerging powers like Türkiye playing a larger role in facilitating peace processes that were traditionally dominated by Western powers.

Despite the optimism surrounding the deal, challenges remain in the implementation phase. Somalia and Ethiopia must contend with internal political pressures, ethnic divisions, and the ongoing threat of militant groups in the region. European observers emphasize the need for continued international support and follow-up to ensure the agreement’s success and prevent any resurgence of conflict.

This breakthrough is viewed as a hopeful sign for the Horn of Africa, with many experts believing that Türkiye’s growing diplomatic engagement in the region can serve as a model for future peacebuilding efforts. The Somalia-Ethiopia deal is a testament to the potential for diplomatic dialogue, even in regions with complex historical tensions. With Türkiye at the helm, the agreement has opened new avenues for cooperation and stability, not only between Somalia and Ethiopia but across the wider Horn of Africa.
