ANC slams violence in Boitumelong

SOUTH aFRICAThe African National Congress (ANC) in North West has condemned acts of public violence and disruptions in Boitumelong Township near Bloemhof, North West.

This after residents went on the rampage, blockading the N12 highway linking Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as forcing all local businesses to close.

Close to 100 protesters have so far been arrested and charged with malicious damage to property as well as public violence.

They are demanding the dissolution of the Lekwa-Teemane Municipal council, saying there is a lack of basic service delivery.

Houses belonging to municipal mayor Moeder Makodi, as well as some councillors have been torched.

We acknowledge the fact that communities have a right to raise whatever dissatisfaction they have, but the best platforms to use are the platforms which are enshrined in the laws of the republic

ANC’s provincial secretary Dakota Legwete says they will state their position regarding the future of the municipal council after visiting the town to establish the facts.

Legwete says: “We acknowledge the fact that communities have a right to raise whatever dissatisfaction they have, but the best platforms to use are the platforms which are enshrined in the laws of the republic than to take the law into their own hands.”

He adds: “As the ANC, we would want to delegitimise and derecognise any acts of violence. Any recommendation is based on facts, for now we don’t have the facts. Once we have the facts, we will pronounce ourselves on what action should be taken.”
