LECTURER, ELS DEPARTMENT AT DELSU CHAPTER, PROFESSOR OJARUEGA AMONGST LIST OF GROWING NUMBERS OF KIDNAPPED STAFF
Professor Enajite Ojaruega lecturer at Delta State University chapter (DELSU) was kidnapped on May 19th. Mrs Ojaruega was ambushed and abducted at gun point at Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State while on her way to Abraka. Since then no word has been heard from her kidnappers. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.
THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Delta State University (DELSU) chapter, at the weekend held a meeting with Delta State Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, at the Abraka campus during which they condemned the abduction of 20 members, their spouses and relations in the last two years
Dr. Emmanuel Nwafor Mordi, ASUU chairman, Delsu Chapter, who was present at the meeting shared his frustrations on the rising number of kidnappings, “It is unfortunate and very frightening that it has become our lot in recent years to be saddled with the burden of combating kidnapping and related nefarious acts, which have posed a danger to the security of lives and property of our members’’.
Prior meetings have been held with police commissioners on the topic of staff abductions. According to information issued by the Public Relation Division of the Vice Chancellor’s Office on DELSU official website, Police Commissioner of Police C.P Ikechukwu met with Vice Chancellor Professor Eric A. Arubayi on January 4, 2013 to discuss the case of Mr. Martins Denedo, a staff of the University who was rescued from kidnappers den. The kidnapping of Mr. Martins Denedo brought to the forefront the involvement of some police officers in the kidnap saga. In an effort to assist the police, Professor Arubayi donated a Hilux van to the Security agency to boost their operation and “noted that a synergy has been formed with the police and hoped that this will continue to reduce crime to the barest minimum.”
However, kidnappings of teachers and their relatives has increased. Dr (Mrs) Mercy Mokobia, was abducted from her home in their bedroom on April 9, 2014 in Abraka, and has not been found or rescued by the police in spite of efforts made by security agents in the state. Professor Enajite Ojaruega now join the list of kidnapped staff of the DELSU chapter.
