The Lagos State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described the late Kudirat Abiola as a heroine of democracy whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic freedom cannot be forgotten so soon.
The party made the statement in commemoration of the 18 years anniversary of the death of the wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola who fell to bullets on June 4 1996.
Its publicity secretary, Gani Taofik said the late Kudirat stood out as wife, mother, and political activist who fought for what she genuinely believed in till she breathed her last .
The party said the best way Nigerians could genuinely immortalize the late heroine is to ensure that the principles and values behind her sacrifice for our democracy do not go in vain.
The party also said that one of the ways the present government can prove to the world that it represents the interest of slain democrats like Kudirat Abiola, Pa. Alfred Rewane, Harry Marshal, and a host of others is to cater for the interests of ordinary men and women on the street who voted them into power.
“The legacy she left as a martyr will continue to motivate human rights activists, political activists and indeed the women to continue the agitation for a better Nigeria”.
“We can only hope that our women will take after such heroine and never again should we have a situation where a man or woman will have to lose his life for the cause of realising his mandate in the country” the statement said.
