UNESCO And The Shoah Memorial Organize A Training Session On The History Of Genocides For Sub-Saharan African Education Officers

Sub-Sahara

Pursuant to its commitment to promote Holocaust education globally so as to contribute, through education, to the prevention of genocides, UNESCO gathers from 15 to 18 September in partnership with the Shoah Memorial representatives of ministries of education from 9 countries of the Africa region for a capacity building seminar titled “Educating about the history of the Holocaust and other genocides: methodologies and challenges”.

This francophone training is a follow-up to a UNESCO consultation on genocide education conducted in September 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa, with 14 ministries of education from the region. The objective is to prepare curriculum and teacher training specialists to introduce this theme in their national education system.

Discussions will be held with French and European experts and UNESCO representatives during workshops dedicated to various aspects of genocide education, notably issues pertaining to classroom teaching methods, curricula development and the production of pedagogical materials well adapted to national contexts. The participants will also visit the Memorial Museum of Drancy, a central historic site in the history of the persecution of Jews in France. The training will also contribute to stimulate regional cooperation and ensure better access to resources and available expertise so as to facilitate the realization of local initiatives.

Representatives from Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Republic of Mauritius, Rwanda and Togo will attend the seminar.

This project is supported the Delegation of France to UNESCO, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah.
