The late Prof Ali Mazrui was laid to rest Sunday in Mombasa.
The renowned scholar was buried at the Mazrui cemetery opposite Fort Jesus in Mombasa Old Town area.
The last prayers were conducted by former Chief Kadhi Sheikh Hammad Kassim.
Leaders who attended the burial include Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and county Governor Hassan Joho.
The scholar’s body arrived early Sunday aboard a Turkish airliner from New York and touched down at the Mombasa International Airport at 2.35am.
The body was taken to his family home at Mombasa’s Old Town at around 4am.
Prayers for the late scholar were held at the Mabruk Mosque before burial.
Mazrui’s family says scholar shunned wealth
His nephew Prof Al Amin Mazrui, author of Kilio Cha Haki, is also traveling to Mombasa for the funeral. “Prof Al Amin spent a better part of time with the late Prof Mazrui during his last days on earth and he shall attend the funeral,” Mohamed said. At the same time, the family clarified that no Islamic laws were broken by delaying his burial for more than a week. “It has not been forbidden in Islamic teachings to delay burial under such circumstances. When he passed on on October 12, it was a public holiday in the US, and making arrangements proved difficult,” he said. “Prof Mazrui  had indicated it was his wish to be buried next to his parents’ last resting place and that had to be at the Mazrui cemetery,’’ he said. The late Prof Mazrui’s mother, Sophia Binti Suleiman Mazrui, and father, Sheikh Al Amin bin Mazrui, are buried at the Mazrui cemetery on Ndia Kuu Road.

Le Prof Ali Mazrui tardive a été enterré dimanche à Mombasa.
Le savant renommé a été enterré dans le cimetière de Mazrui en face de Fort Jésus, dans le quartier de la vieille ville de Mombasa.
Les dernières prières ont été menées par l’ancien chef Kadhi Cheikh Hammad Kassim.
Les dirigeants qui ont assisté à l’enterrement incluent minières Cabinet Secrétaire Najib Balala, juge en chef Willy Mutunga, Mombasa sénateur Hassan Omar et gouverneur du comté Hassan Joho.
Corps de l’érudit suis arrivé dimanche début à bord d’une avion de ligne turque de New York et touché à l’aéroport International de Mombasa à 2,35.
Le corps a été transféré à la maison de sa famille à Old Town de Mombasa à travers 04.
Prières pour l’érudit fin ont eu lieu à la mosquée de Mabruk avant l’enterrement.

Son neveu Prof Al Amin Mazrui, auteur de Kilio Cha Haki, est également en voyage à Mombasa pour l’enterrement. « Prof Al Amin a passé une majeure partie du temps avec la fin Prof Mazrui pendant ses derniers jours sur la terre et il doit assister aux funérailles », a déclaré Mohamed. Dans le même temps, la famille a précisé qu’aucun lois islamiques ont été brisées en retardant son enterrement pendant plus d’une semaine. « Il n’a pas été interdit dans la doctrine islamique pour retarder l’enterrement dans de telles circonstances. Lorsqu’il a transmis le 12 octobre, c’était un jour férié aux Etats-Unis, et prendre des arrangements s’est avéré difficile,”dit-il. « Prof Mazrui  avait indiqué c’était son désir d’être enterré à côté de la dernière demeure de ses parents et qui devait être au cimetière Mazrui,” at-il dit. De la fin Prof Mazrui, Sophia Binti Suleiman Mazrui, père et mère, Sheikh Al Amin bin Mazrui, sont enterrés dans le cimetière de Mazrui sur route Ndia Kuu.
