A senior government official has warned that Nigeria’s northeastern region may soon fall entirely into the hands of Boko Haram militants unless urgent measures are taken.
“With the effrontery of the insurgents, who seem to be capturing territories with ease, very soon, the three north eastern states will become history if urgent steps are not taken to address the situation,” deputy governor of northeastern Borno state Anna Mustapha told reporters on Monday.
“If the Federal Government will not add extra efforts, in the next three months, the three North-East states will not be in existence,” he warned.
Mustapha said that more and more northeastern towns have fallen into the hands of the militants, calling on the government to double its efforts to reverse the trend.
“We appreciate the Federal Government for trying its best, but its best had not been enough,” he said.
“Rather than going after the insurgents, it is the insurgents that are going after us,” Mustapha said.
In the past week, Boko Haram militants seized more territories, despite a government claim of striking a cease-fire with the militant group.
On Monday, at least 21 people were killed and 60 others wounded when a suspected suicide bomber attacked a crowd of Shiites gathered for the yearly Ashura procession at a school in Potiskum town in the northeastern Yobe State.
Nigeria has battled the Boko Haram insurgency in the past five years during which tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced.

Un haut responsable du gouvernement a averti que la région nord-est du Nigéria peut bientôt tomber entièrement entre les mains des militants de Boko Haram sauf si des mesures urgentes soient prises.
“Avec l’effronterie des insurgés, qui semblent être capturer les territoires avec facilité, très bientôt, les trois États du nord-est deviendra histoire si des mesures urgentes ne sont pas prises pour corriger la situation,” vice-gouverneur de l’état de Borno nord-est Anna Mustapha a déclaré aux journalistes lundi.
« Si le gouvernement fédéral n’ajoutera pas de redoubler d’efforts, dans les trois prochains mois, les trois États du nord-est ne sera pas dans l’existence, », a-t-il prévenu.
Mustapha a dit que des villes plus nord-est sont tombés entre les mains des militants, appelant le gouvernement à redoubler d’efforts pour inverser la tendance.
« Nous apprécions le gouvernement fédéral pour son mieux, mais son meilleur n’avait pas été assez, » dit-il.
« Plutôt qu’aller après les insurgés, c’est les insurgés qui vont après nous », a dit Mustapha.
La semaine dernière, des militants de Boko Haram ont saisi plus de territoires, malgré une demande du gouvernement de substitution, un cessez-le-feu avec le groupe militant.
Lundi, au moins 21 personnes ont été tuées et 60 autres blessés quand un kamikaze présumé a attaqué une foule de chiites se sont rassemblés pour la procession d’Achoura chaque année dans une école dans la ville de Potiskum dans l’état de Yobe nord-est.
Nigeria a lutté contre l’insurrection de Boko Haram dans les cinq dernières années au cours de laquelle des dizaines de milliers ont été tués et des millions de déplacés.
