Reiterating his great concern for the current crisis in Burkina Faso and its impact on national and regional stability, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said the joint United Nations and African diplomatic mission sent to the conflict-ridden country last week has returned to the capital city of Ouagadougou to continue its engagements with all parties, with the objective of reaching an agreement that restores constitutional order through democratic elections.
“The joint mission is encouraged by the commitment of the parties to resolving the crisis peacefully and in accordance with the national constitution,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, in a press briefing at UN Headquarters this afternoon.
The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, arrived in Ouagadougou on 31 October as part of a joint mission that also includes the President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs.
As part of its consultations, the spokesperson said, the joint mission met yesterday with the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as the Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Governments.
The spokesperson also noted that Mr. Chambas briefed Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe in Lomé on the progress of the ongoing consultations.
“All interlocutors concurred that the transitional process in Burkina Faso should be in line with constitutional provisions,” the spokesperson said.

Réitérant sa grande préoccupation face à la crise actuelle au Burkina Faso et son impact sur la stabilité nationale et régionale, le Secrétaire général Ban Ki-Moon a déclaré la mission conjointe des Nations Unies et les pays africains diplomatique, envoyée la semaine dernière au pays conflictuel est revenu à la ville de Ouagadougou capitale de poursuivre ses engagements avec toutes les parties, l’objectif étant de parvenir à un accord qui restaure l’ordre constitutionnel à travers des élections démocratiques.

Représentant spécial du Secrétaire général pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, est arrivé à Ouagadougou, le 31 octobre, dans le cadre d’une mission conjointe qui comprend également le Président de la Commission de la Communauté économique des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et le commissaire de l’Union africaine pour les affaires politiques.
Dans le cadre de ses consultations, le porte-parole a dit, la mission conjointe a rencontré hier le Président du Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, en sa qualité de président de l’autorité de la CEDEAO de chefs d’Etat et de gouvernements.
Le porte-parole a également fait remarquer que M. Chambas a informé le président togolais Faure Gnassingbé à Lomé sur l’état d’avancement des consultations en cours.
“Tous les interlocuteurs d’accord que le processus de transition au Burkina Faso devrait être conforme aux dispositions constitutionnelles,” a déclaré le porte-parole.
