Bharti Airtel is set to offer mentorship programmes to the Good Samaritan Orphans and Destitute Centre in Kayole’s Soweto. According to the company, the programme is part of the Airtel spirit where Airtel staff voluntarily give both time and expertise at individual and corporate level to positively impact the community.
Soweto Good Samaritan Orphans and Destitute Children’s Centre is a community based organisation with 75 boys and girls who are either orphans or abandoned. The children have been orphaned for a multitude of reasons although a majority are due to the H.I.V. epidemic, poverty and unwanted pregnancies.
Speaking during a visit to the institution, Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi said, “We were delighted to offer mentorship programmes to the children of Good Samaritan Orphans and Destitute Centre and hope that this will help in bringing up these deserving children with good moral values and positively impact the community”. Mr. El Youssefi further added that, “It is our hope that these special moments we shared made their day as it did ours, with a lasting impression on their life’s journey.”
Good Samaritan Orphans and Destitute Children’s Centre Project Director Emily Omondi Alum said, “Airtel’s visit to the home gives these children a sense of belonging where they feel protected, cared and loved. Ms. Emily further said, “ We are happy that institutions such as Airtel help us realize our institution’s goal, which is to provide the children with a good and permanent shelter and a stable surrounding. In that way our children will be able to live a healthy and prosperous life, just like any other child in this country”.
The Airtel staff treated the children to a lunch and presented them with various gifts and shared special moments with the children through various activities including singing and dancing.
