NEW YORK (United Nations) – The Palestinians’ application for membership to the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been accepted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday the UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
This decision will allow the ICC to investigate as from April 1 on allegations of crimes committed in the Palestinian territories.
Ban announced his decision to the member countries of the ICC on Tuesday night, said Stephane Dujarric.
“The secretary general has ensured that the received documents were regulatory before accepting they are filed,” he added.
The goal of the Palestinian membership process that started Friday at the United Nations is to hold the Israeli leaders accountable for the three offensives against Gaza since 2008, or for the occupation, before this court ruling in cases of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
This move is part of a diplomatic offensive at the UN by the Palestinians, who intend to again submit to the Security Council a draft resolution rejected last week in New York.
