Muhammad Ali will spend his 73rd birthday at home after another spell in hospital.
The former heavyweight champion was released on Friday after treatment for a severe urinary tract infection, family spokesman Bob Gunnell said.
Ali, who was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 17 1942, has Parkinson’s disease. He was treated at an undisclosed hospital in Louisville, but allowed to go home in time to celebrate his birthday.
The man who was nicknamed “the Greatest” when he ruled the heavyweight division, had been re-admitted to hospital earlier this week for follow-up treatment of a problem that had surfaced last month.
“He’s home and resting and glad to be out of the hospital,” Gunnell said, adding that Ali’s family “greatly appreciates the outpouring of support and continued well wishes.”
The former three-time world champion was first admitted to hospital on December 20 with what was believed to be a mild case of pneumonia.
Doctors, however, later determined he was suffering from a urinary tract infection, Gunnell said.
It is not clear when Ali returned to hospital and no mention was made about the seriousness of his condition.
Ali was seen in in public in September 2014 when he attended the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards event in Louisville, where he has a home.
It was reported earlier this month that doctors and family members were concerned because pneumonia could be a dangerous complication for someone suffering from pneumonia.
Ali retired from boxing in 1981 with a professional record of 56-5. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years later.
