Mario Balotelli scored a crucial penalty to earn Liverpool a vital lead going to Istanbul but all the talk and reports, reviews and analysis have focused on how he became the kicker, and all the drama with Henderson and Sturridge.
I know Balotelli has not ignited the fires at Anfield but frankly I can’t understand all the hoopla and I won’t bore you with his legendary shenanigans both on and off the field.
Steven Gerard weighed in too from the ITV studios where he was calling the game as a pundit: “Mario’s been a bit mischievous by going against what the manager has planned.
“Credit to him — he’s finished the penalty off but it would’ve been very interesting in that dressing room if he had missed. I think we would have had a similar situation to what we had at Everton a couple of weeks ago.
“Rules are rules and codes are codes inside a dressing room and when a manager selects a penalty-taker, that penalty-taker should take it. It should’ve been Henderson but fair play to Mario, who was terrific when he came on.
“With the pressure on his shoulders he slotted it away very well and it’s a big goal for us. Jordan has handled the situation very well. He’s known Mario wants the penalty really badly and is desperate to get on the score sheet and he’s stepped away at the right time.”
I thought Gerard should have kept his views to the dressing room, not expressed them on TV as captain and the same goes for Henderson and Sturridge who both showed their disdain.
I have not set out to defend Mario and I think he had a really poor first half of the season, and that was because he wasn’t working hard enough but also because the team was going through a purple patch with injuries to key players, notably Daniel Sturridge, the loss of Suarez and the fact there were so many new players trying to bed in.
In fairness to Mario, he’s had one or two infractions but nothing compared to all the off-field antics for which he has become so notorious. No fireworks, no extravagant parties or showing off and I’m sure many people would be disappointed. This looks like an “I told you so” moment. Well, it’s not, I have seen this happen before when Mario was at Inter Milan.
Mario won a penalty and Eto’O stepped up to take it as Balotelli was set to take the kick. Team captain Javier Zanetti came over and pulled him away as Eto’O tucked the kick away and while other team-mates went to celebrate with Eto’O, Mario walked away sulking. But that’s the Balotelli we want to see at Liverpool, always wanting to win and the fiery one. Watch!
I was a bit frustrated myself when I watched him earlier in the season, not only because of my well-publicised bet with my Supersport.com colleague, and Sports Editor, Nazli Hamilton, but mostly because he wasn’t getting the right passes and I thought he was dropping too deep for the passes. He sometimes tries too hard to infuriate with his aimless dribbles and also falls down easily, but I never doubted his talent and I think he’s one of the most enduring characters of the modern game and he’s still only 24 with a great future.
When he was signed and there was so much doubt cast in the media, I wrote in an earlier blog that Balotelli’s talent will shine through, and it is coming to the fore more than his antics.
Brendan Rodgers, to his credit, kept faith with Mario, playing and defended him to the frustration of both fans and media until he kind of got frustrated and benched him.
When he did return against Tottenham, you could see from his movement and commitment that he was keen to make an impact and he did. A great break down the right by Jordon Ibe set up Adam Lallana whose quick thinking delivered the inch perfect pass and Mario’s movement and precision produced a brilliant finish to a great team goal.
The Everton fans have a unique chant for their former Nigeria international striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, and it goes like this: “Feed the Yak, he will score” and “the Yak” always delivered for all teams he played for, Leicester, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Everton before heading to Asia, first China, then Qatar and returning to Reading last weekend with a bang.
Balotelli is not a box predator like the Yak but what he has struggled with all season is getting decent service, and his lack of movement in the final third could be a contributing factor. However, Liverpool have lacked that cutting edge pressing game we all delighted in last season and the chances were few and far between but he did take a lot of shots either blocked or denied by the keeper and the post.
When he scored against Swansea in the League Cup, it was a well-taken goal off a brilliant cross from the right by Fabio Borini, again perfect execution and his best goal was the only goal in Liverpool’s only win in the Uefa Champions League at home to Ludogorets.
Mario controlled Alberto Moreno’s left wing cross with the inside of his right foot, flipped the ball over one defender while holding off another, then controlled, then poked past the keeper with the outside of his right foot.
So much was made of Balotelli’s refusal to celebrate his winning goal against Spurs but that is vintage Mario, and more than anything else, you could see the goal meant a lot to him and for any striker going through a goal drought, a goal like that inspires confidence.
In his next game, against Crystal Palace, his introduction was crucial to the win. First his movement helped distract the palace defenders to pave the way for Sturridge to steal in unmarked to shoot in Henderson’s cross, then he won and took the free kick that went straight to the keeper who parried to Lallana to score the winner.
You could sense that Mario was growing in confidence and so when the brilliant Jordon Ibe was brought down, people forget it was Balotelli who laid on the pass for Ibe to earn the penalty.
Now, in the absence of Gerard, Jordan Henderson the captain had been taking all the set pieces, corners, free-kicks and would fancy his chances of converting as he picked up the ball before Balotelli stepped up to take it away from him.
Mario was confident he would score and why not? He had scored 26 out of 28 penalties before yesterday and so it was a no-brainer except Jordon Henderson, and not surprisingly Daniel Sturridge, thought differently.
Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers did his best to downplay the controversy. “We got the win, which was the most important factor tonight,” said the Reds boss. “Steven should have taken it as he is our penalty taker. I have a number of outstanding penalty takers in the squad with Jordan, Mario, Rickie Lambert and others. “You saw the spirit of the team tonight. To get the victory was excellent..”
Even if Mario had missed, I would still applaud him for raising his hand. It’s a sign of his new-found confidence which has been bringing him closer to his best and it can only be good news for Liverpool.
Mario knows it was wrong to openly defy his captain but you could see he just wanted his team to win and no one should begrudge him now with a new record that reads 27 scored out of 29 taken.
Henderson showed maturity in his post-match coments and earned my respect when he said: “I wanted the penalty, but Mario felt confident and he has taken big penalties before. It was a great penalty in the end. It’s a big goal for us. “Everyone wants to take them. I felt confident but so did Mario, he has taken big penalties before and he got the nod.”
It was also great to see Mario apologise on Instagram page immediately after the game as he urged the Henderson and the Liverpool faithful to put the incident behind them, with three points in the bag:
More goals from Balotelli will push Liverpool close to their Uefa Champions League designs and silverware aspirations. That goal is Mario’s fourth for Liverpool since his summer move to Anfield, and despite all the negatives spoken and written about him, they have been crucial late goals, three of them earning wins, and one the vital equaliser against Swansea in the League Cup.
Brendan Rodgers must be a happy man because of his belief when he sighed him back in August: “I see Blackburn holding out for £15m for Jordan Rhodes, who’s a terrific young talent. But you look at the market and Mario’s an absolute steal at £16m in terms of talent.
“But it’s about the package and that’s where I have to do my work to make sure we can maximise that talent.”
