Samsung has finally revealed their 2015 flagship smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.(REUTERS)
After much anticipation, and even a couple of Internet leaks, Samsung has finally revealed their 2015 flagship smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.
The South Korean company launched and unpacked their new devices at this year’s World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday.
Samsung South Africa had a live stream session of the launch organized for the local media at the Saxon hotel in Johannesburg.
New features on the smartphone sees Samsung ditch the plastic for metal which they say is 50% stronger than other high-end smartphone.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge has a built-in battery with built-in wireless charging. Not only does this promise charge 1.5 times faster than previous models, it also means that the handset can be popped onto any compatible charging pad for a wire-free charging experience. Unfortunately these charging pads are not included in the purchase price.
The 5-mega pixels front-camera is an added bonus for all the selfie-enthusiasts, especially when the software updates are compared to the Samsung S5, which only offers 2-megapixel photographs.
The new S6 also boasts a 16-megapixel sensor back-camera for increased crispness and quality.
The fingerprint scanner first seen on the Samsung S5 has been upgraded and fingers no longer have to be swiped across the pad. Now, the fingerpad can simply be pressed against the sensor for an accurate identification.
Critics have, however, questioned Samsung’s decision to exclude the microSD slot in the new model. While the S6 offers a choice between 32, 64 or 128GB, the design change means that consumers will have to pay upfront for onboard storage that cannot be expanded as needed at a later stage.
Attendees of the event agree that the Galaxy S6 is a great upgrade for Samsung, but excitement is already building as consumers wait to see what Apple, Samsung’s biggest rival, will unveil next in retaliation.
The mobile device is set to hit international stores on April 10th 2015.
The Galaxy S6’s South African launch is yet to be announced.
