Following the violence that trailed the electioneering campaign of the Oyo State Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Engr.OluSeyi Makinde in Oyo town , the police in the State have been called upon to do a thorough investigation and ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
Makinde expressed sadness that some people under whatever guise would not want to move with time and current trend of politics without bitterness. According to him, “I find it difficult to understand and explain the rationale behind the dastardly act because we are known for our non-violent disposition and we do not pretend to be what we are not.” “We are committed to our resolve to bring about a new order in politics and there is no amount of provocation that can derail us from our chosen path of peace which we are sure our people have already complied with
Makinde is an engineer and is the group managing director of the Makon Group of Companies in Nigeria. Makinde graduated from engineering school and worked as an engineer for five years before founding his first business. The initial investment made by Makinde was N50,000, and over the next fifteen or so years the business grew to more than N1 billion

Unless Oyo State develops fresh and new economic ideas that will make reliance on hand-outs from Abuja in the name of Federal Allocation outdated, the problems of unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities and general under-development will continue to go from bad to worse. This is because of the fall in the oil price in the international market.
The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, Seyi Makinde made this observation in Ibadan during his ongoing electioneering campaign tour of Ibadan North Local Government area of the state.
Makinde, who acknowledged the agony the government workers as well as pensioners in the state were facing as a result of unpaid salaries, gratuities and pensions, maintained that such was the result of over-dependence on Federal Allocation from Abuja and without a break from such system, the trend would not only continue, it would grow from bad to worse.
He said, “I want to tell you, our people that our economic salvation in the state lies in strategic thinking and a total departure from the past; which our party represents, having developed an economic blue-print for the overall development of the state”.
During the campaign tour, which took him and his team through Idi-Ape, Basorun, Ashi, Bodija, Agbowo, Orogun, Sango, Iso-Pako, Ijokodo, Oke-Tunu, Sabo, Mokola and Inalende, Makinde told the enthusiastic people that trooped out to welcome him that “the economy of a state like ours can only be buoyant through regular payment of workers’ salaries and allowances and we have seen how dull the market is everywhere because of the situation of our workers”.
“We are promising you a remarkable departure because the administration we are going to run will not rely on monthly allocation from Abuja and if it was possible for the administration of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo to perform the various feats that gave Oyo State the pace-setter sobriquet, we are saying it is possible.
“With every sense of gratitude to God, if at my private level, I could start a business with N50,000 and such business today employs thousands of people across the globe, turning the economic fortunes of the state around for the benefit of all cannot be difficult”, he said.
Asking the people to give room for new ideas by voting for his party in the elections, the SDP governorship candidate insisted that “there’s no way there can be a different result by continuing to do things the same way, we are not going to toe the same line because we have fresh, better, and new ideas that can give us different and better results”.
Responding to the various demands of the people at the different campaign spots which were mainly social amenities like good roads, water, conveniences, especially in the market places among others, Makinde assured the people that with improved economy in the state, it won’t be difficult to meet their needs.
The Oyo State Social Democratic party, SDP, governorship candidate in the coming election, Seyi Makinde, has offered to under write the medical bills of the 14-year old SS1 student of his Alma mater, Bishop Phillips Academy High School, Ibadan, Iyanu Dahunsi, who was brutalised by the secretary of the school principal and now receiving treatment at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, for a damaged eye. Makinde said this when he visited the girl at the hospital on Thursday. The SDP governorship hopeful was in the hospital for an interactive session with the workers.
Makinde also donated a sum of N1 million to the Indigent Patients Fund, for the treatment of patients who are too poor to raise fund for their treatment in the hospital. At the interactive session, he promised the hospital staff to partner with them to take health care delivery to an enviable height if elected governor of the state in the coming election. He pointed out that if the available health facilities in the state are properly funded and maintained, expensive medical trips abroad by many Nigerians would be stemmed, and such funds will come into the purse of the government.
While responding to the complaints of the workers that though they are federal government workers, they are subjected to high taxes by the Oyo State government, Makinde noted that taxes are by law a duty of citizens, but promised to look into the law for any irregularities that might warrant the high taxes if elected. He promised the workers not to forget them in the distribution of amenities and government support for the people of Oyo state if they could use their votes to take him to the Agodi government house.
At the office of the UCH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Temitope Alonge, he said that he would be willing to partner the hospital to increase health care delivery in the state. At the bed side of the young school girl, Miss Dahunsi, after he was assured by the CMD that the hospital has all it takes to treat the girl, Makinde said all the bills for the treatment would be borne by him; assuring the girl that her damaged eye will be restored and she would soon return to her studies.
In the tour of the local government, which took the governorship candidate and his team through Beere, Oja’ba, Foko, through Born-Photo to Idi-Arere, Bode, Molete, Idi-Odo, Challenge, MKO Abiola Way, Aleshinloye Market and back to Apata, Makinde told the people of the state his readiness to serve them with all his might.
He told the residents, who trooped out in large number to receive him at every point and turned the peaceful rally into carnival, that his coming into politics was not about his person, family or friends, but to use his God-given talent to take the masses out of poverty.
The need for the state to make a meaningful change, Makinde reasoned could not be further delayed, hence, ”my charge to you my people is to take this opportunity at hand to vote in all the SDP candidates in the elections so that the revolution we want to bring into governance in the state can come into reality.
“Please, do not sell your PVCs for whatever reason and for whatever amount because the loss to be incurred by so doing will be too monumental to contemplate. We owe this generation a duty to give it hope and this is the core of our message”, he stated further.
The Ibadan South-West State Constituency 1 candidate for the party, Olu Bello, who spoke with journalists in Apata during the campaign described the visit of Makinde to the area as home-coming, because of his personal and past philanthropic gestures through which he had touched various lives.
“I want to assure you that our party (SDP) will not have any problem winning the elections hands down in this local government council and you can see things for yourselves, the crowd you are seeing is not rented, it consists of dedicated, loyal and committed party supporters and enthusiasts”, the aspiring lawmaker said.
