Former president of Madagascar Marc Ravalomanana(SABC)
The president made the announcement late on Saturday after a national reconciliation meeting organised by Madagascar’s Christian churches, saying he “agreed to repeal” Ravalomanana’s detention.
Ravalomanana was arrested in October last year, days after returning to the country for the first time since he was deposed in a 2009 coup. After the coup, the large, nickel-producing island state suffered years of political turmoil.
Ravalomanana and the man who toppled him, Andry Rajoelina, were barred from running in the 2013 presidential election under a deal brokered by regional African states.
Rajaonarimampianina, who took office in January 2014 after a peaceful election a month earlier, said at the time that Ravalomanana was detained “for his own safety”. Police and pro-Ravalomanana demonstrators clashed after his arrest.

Chef de Madagascar Hery Rajaonarimampianina a déclaré qu’ilmettrait fin à l’assignation à domicile de l’ancien Président MarcRavalomanana dans le cadre d’un processus de paix sur l’île del’océan Indien.
Le Président a fait l’annonce tard le samedi après qu’une réunionde réconciliation nationale organisée par les églises chrétiennesde Madagascar, disant qu’il la détention « a décidé d’abroger »Ravalomanana.
Ravalomanana a été arrêté en octobre dernier, jours après son retour au pays pour la première fois, puisqu’il fut renversé par uncoup d’état de 2009. Après le coup d’État, l’état de l’île grande,producteurs de nickel a subi des années de troubles politiques.
Ravalomanana et l’homme qui a renversé à lui, Andry Rajoelina,ont été empêchés de s’exécuter lors de l’élection présidentiellede 2013 sous un accord négocié par les Etats africains régionaux.
Rajaonarimampianina, qui a pris ses fonctions en janvier 2014après une élection paisible un mois plus tôt, a dit à l’époque queRavalomanana a été arrêté “pour sa propre sécurité”. Lesmanifestants pro-Ravalomanana et de policiers se sont affrontésaprès son arrestation.
