Those who happened by Mrs Macquarie’s Point on Wednesday were treated to the sounds of Africa as the African Children’s Choir danced, sang and rattled their drums ahead of a major concert in Wollongong this Sunday.
Children from the choir – founded in 1984 by Canadian human rights activist Ray Barnett in part to present a different view to the world of children in Africa – will join 1000 Australian singers as well as pop-opera star Kate Miller-Heidke for what’s billed as a Massed Choir Spectacular. The local choir will feature 100 singers from the Sydney Children’s Choir and the Gondwana Campbelltown Indigenous Children’s Choir.
Since the African Children’s Choir was founded, more than 1000 children from Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana have toured the world, raising funds to pay for their own education and that of more than 50,000 other children. The choir has been nominated for a Grammy, performed for the Queen and at the White House and Carnegie Hall. They toured Australia for the first time in 2013.
The African Children’s Choir will perform with Kate Miller-Heidke and various singers at the Wollongong Massed Choir Spectacular at WIN Entertainment Centre on Sunday.
