Chinese Firm Wins Contract To Explore Coal in East Kenya // L’entreprise Chinoise Remporte Un Contrat A La Découverte Du Charbon Au Kenya Oriental

Kenya has awarded a consortium led by a Chinese firm a concession deal to develop two coal blocks in the country’s eastern region.

The ministry of energy and petroleum said the Chinese firm, HCIG Energy InvestmentCompany Ltd, will partner with Liketh Investments Kenya to extract and process coal onblocks A and B in Kitui County.

“The consortium will now be invited for negotiations with the ministry as per the tenderrequirements on the basis of their responsiveness in the technical and financial proposalsthey submitted,” the ministry said in a statement received Wednesday in Nairobi.

The ministry said the HCIG and Liketh consortium is one of the three technically-successful firms for the concession of the two coal blocks whose financial proposals wereopened on March 23.

The power generation plant, which will be built near Mui basin, where huge deposits ofcoal have been found, is projected to be ready for operation in the next 36 months.

The award follows the evaluation and acceptance by the ministry of energy and petroleumof the consortium’s technical and financial proposals in the tender for concession of thetwo coal blocks.

“The concession also provides for construction and maintenance of minimumeconomically viable coal fired power plant, utilizing some of the coal to generate power forown use and sale of limited excess power to the national grid,” the ministry said.

The East African nation has a huge mineral potential but its exploration efforts have onlypicked in the last six years with the awarding of commercial licences in prospecting for oil,gold, coal, geothermal and rare earths.

The coal and gas fired power plants are projects under the 5000+ MW program launchedby the energy ministry early last month, and which aims at putting an additional over 5000MW into the national grid by 2016.

La firme chinoise, HCIG, InvestmentCompany Energy Ltd,s’associera à Kenya investissements Liketh à extraire et àtransformer le charbon onblocks A et B dans le comté de Kitui, a indiqué le ministère de l’énergie et du pétrole.

“Le consortium sera invité maintenant des négociations avec leministère conformément à la tenderrequirements sur la base deleur réactivité dans la proposalsthey technique et financier a fait valoir,” le ministère a déclaré dans un communiqué reçu mercredià Nairobi.

Le ministère a indiqué que le HCIG et le consortium Liketh estl’une des trois entreprises techniquement réussies pour laconcession du charbon deux blocs dont wereopened depropositions financières le 23 mars.

La centrale de génération électrique, qui sera construite près debassin du MUI, ofcoal immenses gisements ont étédécouverts, devrait pour être prêt à fonctionner au cours des 36mois.

Le prix fait suite à l’évaluation et l’acceptation par le ministère del’énergie et petroleumof propositions techniques et financièresdu consortium dans l’appel d’offres pour la concession de la deuxde charbon.

« La concession prévoit également de construction etmaintenance de charbon viable minimumeconomically tiré decentrale électrique, utilisant certains du charbon pour produirede l’électricité forown utilisé et la vente d’une puissance troplimitée au réseau national, », a déclaré le ministère.

La nation d’Afrique de l’est a un énorme potentiel de minéral,mais ses efforts d’exploration ont onlypicked dans les sixdernières années avec l’octroi de permis de pêche commercialesà la prospection de pétrole, or, charbon, terres rares etgéothermiques.

Le charbon et le gaz ont tiré des centrales électriques sont desprojets dans le cadre de la 5000 + MW programme lancées au début du mois dernier, le ministère de l’énergie, et qui vise àmettre un supplémentaire sur 5000MW dans le réseau nationalde 2016.
