Abby Wambach has sued over artificial turf and complained about it regularly, becoming a spiritual descendant of that great philosopher and former slugger Dick Allen, who memorably said, “If a horse can’t eat it, I don’t want to play on it.”
Left with no choice but to play on synthetic turf in the Women’s World Cup, though, Wambach made the best of it Tuesday night, scoring on a corner kick in the 45th minute as the United States defeated Nigeria, 1-0, won Group D and advanced to the Round of 16.
With two victories and a tie in group play, the Americans will play Monday in Edmonton, Alberta, against a third-place finisher that will be determined Wednesday.
Wambach, 35, had not scored in the United States’ first two matches. And she had been a rare substitute, not a starter, against Sweden. But she had never failed to score at least one goal in group play in three previous World Cups. On Tuesday, she delivered the winning goal just before halftime, bringing a roar of approval and relief from the 52,193 spectators at B.C. Place Stadium.
In the eighth minute, Wambach had made a deft heading pass on an apparent goal that was nullified when Julie Johnston was ruled offsides. The American attack was active but sometimes impatient, with Alex Morgan making her first start in this World Cup. As halftime approached, though, the United States finally broke a scoreless tie.
Nigeria had shown vulnerability on set pieces in this tournament. And it did again. On an inswinging corner kick by Megan Rapinoe, Wambach rushed toward the far post, jumped and volleyed the ball with her left foot from about four yards as the defender Sarah Nnodim dived futilely in front of her.
The goal was the 183rd of Wambach’s brilliant career, the most in international soccer. It was also her 14th in four World Cups, one behind the career leader, Marta of Brazil. And it was the first goal scored by an American forward in this tournament by what has been an uneven attack. The Americans were not able to increase their lead even though Nigeria played a man down for the final 20 minutes.
Coach Jill Ellis made several lineup changes as the Americans made a rapacious attempt to score goals against a Nigerian defense that had been porous against Sweden and Australia.
Morgan had played only 23 minutes in first two matches, recovering from a bone bruise in her left knee. This was her first start since April 11. Up front, Wambach and Morgan replaced Sydney Leroux and Christen Press, who developed little chemistry in a 0-0 tie against Sweden.
Tobin Heath also started on the left wing, replacing Morgan Brian in midfield as the United States looked for creativity and reliability on what had too often been a subdued attack in this World Cup.
From the beginning, the Americans were ambitious but also apparently overeager. Four times they were called offsides early on. Morgan was predictably rusty in the first half. And Johnston’s right-footed blast was waved off in the eighth minute.
Nigeria needed a victory to reach the knockout rounds and could not afford to play cautiously. It put the American back line under stress in the early going. In the eighth minute, forward Asisat Oshoala drilled a low shot from 15 yards that forced Hope Solo into a diving save.
In the 25th minute, Oshoala sprinted past Johnston on a fast break, running onto a perfectly feathered through pass, but Johnston desperately caught up, got a foot on the ball and deflected Oshaola’s shot wide of the right post.
Morgan grew comfortable and threatened twice with her speed in the second half before being replaced by Leroux in the 65th minute. But it was Wambach who made her presence felt most assertively. It could be that the Americans will go only as far in this tournament as she can take them as she seeks to win her first World Cup before retiring.
Wambach joined about five dozen players who filed a lawsuits seeking to make FIFA install grass surfaces in the World Cup. Men have always played on grass. Last weekend, Wambach said the United States would have scored more goals early in this tournament if the surface had been grass.
She also said she played less aggressively on turf, not as willing to launch body to score goals with her head, which is her specialty. She said she was “way more carefree” on grass.
“I’m throwing my body, I’m not worried about anything,” Wambach said. “There’s no second-guessing.”
Wambach awkwardly missed a header that should have been a goal in the United States’ opening 3-1 victory against Australia, then had a diving header saved in a 0-0 tie against Sweden.
“I don’t lay out and commit to those headers and that’s why they glance off my head rather than me contacting them,” Wambach said.
She added about playing on turf: “You have to play the ball more to feet, the ball rolls faster, it depends if it has just been watered, depends if the water has dried, depends on what turf we are actually playing on. So there are a lot of factors that go into it that to the average person watching the game, they may not realize that it does make a huge difference to how the game is played.”
Ellis said that she wanted the turf to be watered more often to make the playing surfaces faster, adding, “I think every team would appreciate that.”
But, Ellis added before Tuesday’s game, “It’s the same for everybody. For me, the focus is, ‘We’ve got to get it done, period.’ ”
Wambach agreed and provided the decisive moment Tuesday.
“Championship teams are the teams that are able to deal with all things, in all moments, in all sorts of ways,” she said.
