Virgin Active hopes to attract new fitness fanatics in Asia and Africa after the group was snapped up by South African billionaire Christo Wiese.
Wiese’s investment vehicle Brait paid £682million for an 80 per cent stake from private equity firm CVC and Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.
Branson retains a 20 per cent stake in the Virgin Active, which yesterday revealed 2014 sales up 4 per cent to £638.6million.
Earnings at the group reached £124million – up 1 per cent when taking currency changes into account and up 13 per cent on an underlying basis.
The group said it has spent £82.2million on improving its clubs over the past year and that membership numbers were up 2 per cent to 1.31million, excluding the impact of clubs it had sold or closed.
