By Kim Jae-won Daewoo E&C said Wednesday that it supports Nigerian schools, from remodeling a library and donating books to establishing schools and giving scholarships to students. The local constructor said it renovated a school library at Port Harcourt in southern Nigeria in May as part of the company’s overseas corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. Daewoo E&C donated a few hundred books to the library as well. “We will continue to participate in CSR activities by helping people based on their needs,” the company said in a statement. “We encourage our employees to join the activities.” In Bayelsa State in the African country, Daewoo built schools and donated scholarships to students. The company established street lights powered by solar energy in Delta State, something that was covered by the local media. In addition, the company has distributed medicine, home appliances and clothes to residents there. In Morocco, the company offers necessities to orphanages and social welfare centers under the name of the Daewoo-Youth Morocco Program. Since 2012, Daewoo has joined the Free Eye Camp run by Korean charity group Vision Care, most of the members of which are eye doctors. The company also donated emergency kits to refugees in Algeria and the Philippines who were forced to evacuate by natural disasters. In October, 66 executives and employees of Daewoo E&C visited the Holt Ilsan Center, a social welfare center taking care of physically challenged people. They cleaned the center, served food and donated 10 million won to the center. The builder also cooperates with its subcontractors by offering education programs. Daewoo invites executives of its subcontractors to its lecture program where they can learn a wide range of things, including business strategies, history and the arts. “We believe that it is a win-win strategy to offer education programs to subcontractors in the long-term,” the company said. |
