The Tunisian security services informed former President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki on Monday that he is the target of a terrorist plot.

A former adviser used social media to reveal that Marzouki received a formal notice from security agents in the Sousse governorate that there is “definite information about a terrorist plot” targeting him for assassination. Adnan Moncer added that Marzouki’s office will hold a press conference on Monday afternoon to give further details at the central headquarters of the Congress Party for the Republic.

Marzouki took over the presidency in Tunisia after the National Constituent Assembly elections in 2011. He was beaten in 2014 by the current president in the first presidential election to be held since the Tunisian revolution that toppled Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The Tunisian authorities announced earlier that they had thwarted simultaneous attacks on hotels, security centres and vital installations, in addition to attempts to assassinate politicians in Sousse this month. They added that they have arrested a cell of jihadists who were trained in Syria and Libya.
