Technology Levels the Playing Field: Empowering Students with Disabilities

During an executive breakfast on Intelligent Education technologies organised by Anthology Technologies, in the context of Uganda’s Digital Agenda Strategy last week, stakeholders in the education sector, students and tech experts discussed how best Uganda’s high education institutions can adapt and implement digital learning with ease.

In Uganda, technology is increasingly becoming a powerful tool in leveling the educational playing field for students with disabilities. Several initiatives have emerged to support learners with disabilities by providing assistive devices and improving accessibility in schools and universities.

For instance, the Uganda National Union of Disabled Persons (NUDIPU) has been advocating for better access to public and educational facilities. Unfortunately, many students with physical disabilities still face challenges, such as navigating buildings that lack ramps or elevators. However, there are efforts to address these issues, including the installation of disability-friendly facilities at some universities like Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono.

Additionally, assistive devices such as custom-made wheelchairs and hearing aids are being promoted to improve learning conditions. Some organizations, like Kalinga Child Development Centre, are producing low-cost wheelchairs using local materials like bamboo to ensure that these aids are accessible to families in rural areas.

There are also schools like Kavule Parents School for the Deaf in Budaka District, which provides specialized education for children with hearing impairments. Despite facing financial challenges, this school continues to offer quality education and vocational training to empower children with disabilities.

These efforts, combined with the government’s tax waivers on assistive products and ongoing advocacy, are creating hope for students with disabilities across Uganda, offering them a better chance to succeed in their education and beyond.
