Zambia to Acquire Mining Permits Following Nationwide Mapping Exercise

Zambia is set to gain control over several mining permits as part of a comprehensive national mapping exercise aimed at restructuring the country’s mineral resource management. The exercise, conducted by the government in collaboration with geological experts, has identified key areas rich in mineral deposits, opening up new opportunities for state involvement in the mining sector.

The Zambian government has announced plans to secure ownership of some of these mining permits, particularly in regions with high-value resources such as copper, cobalt, and other critical minerals. This move is part of Zambia’s broader strategy to enhance local participation in the mining industry and increase revenue generation from its natural resources.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, stated that the mapping exercise has provided the government with crucial data that will allow Zambia to better manage its mineral wealth. The acquisition of mining permits by the state is seen as a step toward reducing dependency on foreign mining companies, ensuring that more of the country’s mineral wealth benefits Zambians.

The government has also pledged to work closely with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that the benefits of these resources are widely shared. In addition to state ownership, Zambia plans to encourage joint ventures between the government and private investors, both local and international, to boost production and modernize mining operations.

This development comes as Zambia seeks to strengthen its mining policies and attract investment while maximizing the long-term benefits of its vast mineral resources for the nation’s economic growth.
