Tragedy Strikes Uganda as Lightning Claims 14 Lives and Wounds 34

14 killed, 34 wounded in Uganda lightning

In a devastating incident, 14 people were killed and 34 others injured when lightning struck during a heavy rainstorm in Uganda’s western region. The tragedy occurred on Saturday afternoon in the districts of Bundibugyo and Ntoroko, where residents had gathered for a community event.

Witnesses reported that the lightning strike occurred suddenly as people were participating in a gathering. Many victims were struck while sheltering under trees, a common practice during heavy rains. Local authorities have confirmed that the deceased included both adults and children, with several individuals suffering from severe injuries. The injured were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

It was a horrifying scene. We were enjoying the event when suddenly, the sky turned dark and a loud thunderclap echoed, recounted one survivor. The next moment, people were screaming and lying on the ground. We tried to help them, but it was chaotic.

In the wake of the tragedy, local leaders and health officials have called for increased awareness about the dangers of lightning strikes, especially during the rainy season. They urged community members to avoid seeking shelter under trees and to stay indoors during thunderstorms.

This is a painful loss for our community. We need to educate our people on safety measures during storms to prevent such tragedies in the future, said a local councilor.

The Ugandan government has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and has promised to support those affected by the incident. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja stated, We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones.

Lightning strikes are unfortunately common in Uganda, particularly during the rainy season, which spans from March to May and again from September to November. The country has experienced several lightning-related incidents in the past, leading to calls for improved meteorological services and community education on storm safety. As Uganda mourns the loss of life, officials are working to provide necessary support and care for the injured and their families, while emphasizing the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
