Hani’s Killer to Be Deported as Parole Comes to an End

The killer of South African anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani, Janusz Waluś, is set to be deported following the end of his parole period. Waluś, who was convicted of assassinating Hani in 1993, has been a controversial figure since his release on parole after serving nearly 30 years in prison.

The decision to deport Waluś comes after his parole terms expired and authorities determined that he should not remain in South Africa. Waluś, a Polish national, was granted parole in 2020 under the condition that he would be released from prison but not allowed to remain in South Africa, where his actions remain deeply contentious.

Hani’s assassination, which shocked the nation and nearly derailed South Africa’s transition to democracy, continues to stir emotions in the country. The decision to deport Waluś has been met with mixed reactions—some see it as a final step toward justice, while others believe the issue remains unresolved due to the political context surrounding the assassination.

Hani’s family and many South Africans have long called for justice and reconciliation, with some arguing that Waluś should have faced a longer sentence, while others believe he should have been denied parole altogether. The move to deport him aims to bring closure to a painful chapter in South Africa’s history.

The government has stated that Waluś will be deported to Poland, where he has family ties. The deportation is expected to take place soon, marking the end of a lengthy and controversial legal process.
