Christmas Then and Now By Jide Adesina

 Christmas of Old

Oh, how the bells of memory chime,
Calling back a gentler time
When Christmas lived in hearths aglow,
And love fell soft as winter’s snow.

Candles flickered in window frames,
Children carved joy from simple games.
The world was wrapped in evergreen,
With songs that crowned each peaceful scene.

Mothers hummed while baking bread,
Fathers placed gifts with quiet tread.
No digital screens, no hurried scrolls
Just whispered prayers and hopeful souls.

“Silent Night” rose through the cold,
With voices warm, both young and old.
The church doors wide, the stars aligned
Peace on earth, in heart and mind.

Christmas Now

Now, cities bloom with neon fire,
Holidays blaze with fierce desire.
The air hums loud with carols sold,
Where joy is bought with cards of gold.

Packages pile at every door,
Promised wonder from online stores.
The children still wait by the tree
Their eyes lit bright with expectancy.

We FaceTime greetings from far away,
Distance shrinks in a text’s display.
A virtual hug, a photo’s glow,
Still warms the heart through winter’s snow.

The Spirit Eternal

But Christmas, timeless, still abides
A light that shines through life’s divides.
Be it in chimneys soot-stained and old,
Or sparkling homes decked in gold

It’s found in kindness freely shared,
In burdens eased and hearts that cared.
The gift is love  not wrapped, not sold
A flame that burns through young and old.

The Christ-child born in manger bare
Still whispers peace through frosted air.
Whether in humble huts or grand displays,
His light endures through all our days.

A Wish Across Time

So let the bells of joy resound,
Through crowded streets or quiet towns.
May old traditions blend with new,
And Christmas shine in all we do.

May we remember through life’s haze,
The magic of those simpler days.
A time when hearts were free from care
When love was the only gift to share.

So here’s my wish both true and wide:
That Christmas joy stays by your side.
Through past, through now, through what’s to be,
May its light shine eternally.
