Cherries, Cheers and Cargo: Air New Zealand Expects 5M Kilos of Cargo Over Festive Season

This holiday season, Air New Zealand Cargo continues its vital role in connecting New Zealand’s finest produce with international markets.

The airline expects to transport an impressive 5 million kilograms of cargo during December and January, with many products destined for Christmas celebrations worldwide.

As the national carrier, Air New Zealand operates an extensive network of international routes, utilizing both dedicated cargo aircraft and belly space in passenger planes to maintain efficient global supply chains.

“Delivering New Zealand’s exceptional produce to global markets is both an honor and a responsibility, particularly during the festive season,” says Air New Zealand General Manager of Cargo Anne Dunne.

“We’re proud to help distribute our premium lamb and cherries internationally, acting as Santa’s helpers with cargo holds full of seasonal delights.

The airline’s cargo operation has grown significantly since its inception, now serving over 20 international destinations with sophisticated temperature-controlled facilities ensuring product freshness throughout the journey.

This infrastructure investment demonstrates Air New Zealand’s commitment to supporting New Zealand’s export sector, which contributes substantially to the country’s economic growth and community development.

Cherry exports hold special significance during this period, especially in Asian markets. These fruits symbolize good fortune, wealth, and family togetherness as Chinese New Year approaches.

80% of New Zealand’s cherry harvestis exported during this time. Air New Zealand Cargo ensures efficient delivery to major Asian destinations including Taipei, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Additional shipments reach North America, while partnership networks facilitate distribution to Vietnam.

The airline’s dedicated cold chain management system maintains optimal temperatures throughout transit, preserving the cherries’ premium quality.

The airline’s cargo service extends beyond fruit, playing a crucial role in transporting New Zealand’s celebrated grass-fed meat to international markets for Christmas dining.

November alone saw approximately 120,000 kilograms of lamb and beef transported to destinations like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Zurich.

Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, equipped with state-of-the-art cargo handling systems, ensures these premium products reach their destinations in perfect condition.

Seafood exports also peak during the Christmas period, with 1.3 billion kilograms annually crossing the Tasman Sea to Australia. Popular items include salmon, tuna, and shellfish, meeting the high demand for premium seafood during holiday celebrations.

Air New Zealand’s frequent trans-Tasman flights provide the rapid transit essential for maintaining seafood freshness.

As part of its sustainability commitment, Air New Zealand Cargo has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining export efficiency. These include optimized loading procedures, fuel-efficient route planning, and the gradual introduction of sustainable aviation fuel options.

“From traditional lamb roasts to celebratory cherries and summer seafood feasts, we take pride in helping Kiwi exporters share their products with the world,” Dunne concludes. “It’s about connecting New Zealand’s finest produce with global consumers who appreciate its exceptional quality.

Air New Zealand’s cargo operations form a crucial link in the global supply chain, supporting not only seasonal exports but year-round trade relationships.

The airline’s investment in modern aircraft, including the latest addition to its fleet, the Airbus A321neo, further enhances its cargo capacity and efficiency, ensuring New Zealand’s premium products continue to reach international markets swiftly and reliably.
