Ghana Suspends Diplomatic Relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

Ghana has announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a move that marks a significant shift in the country’s foreign policy. The decision, made public in early January 2025, has stirred reactions both within Ghana and across the international community. Ghana, a member of the African Union (AU), had previously recognized the SADR, which claims sovereignty over Western Sahara, a disputed region in North Africa.

The reasons behind the suspension remain unclear, but analysts suggest that it is linked to Ghana’s desire to strengthen ties with Morocco, which claims sovereignty over Western Sahara. Morocco has long been opposed to the SADR’s declaration of independence and considers Western Sahara part of its territory. Ghana’s decision is seen as a possible realignment in response to growing diplomatic pressures and its evolving relations with Rabat.

The suspension could have significant implications for the SADR, as Ghana had been one of its supporters within the African Union. The move could signal a broader shift in how African nations engage with the issue of Western Sahara, a region whose status remains unresolved after decades of conflict.

In response, the SADR expressed disappointment, calling Ghana’s decision a setback for African solidarity. The situation underscores the complexities of the Western Sahara dispute and the ongoing diplomatic maneuvering among African nations regarding their positions on this contentious issue.

As of now, it remains to be seen how other African nations and international bodies will react to Ghana’s move, which could influence the wider geopolitical landscape in the region.
