Sudan’s Army Decries Ethnically-Targeted Killings in El Gezira Amid Escalating Violence

Sudan’s army has strongly condemned recent ethnically-targeted killings of civilians in El Gezira, a region previously seen as a refuge from the country’s ongoing conflict. Reports of systematic violence have emerged, with local and international observers attributing the atrocities to militias exploiting the region’s fragile security situation.

The killings mark a disturbing escalation in Sudan’s civil strife, which began in April 2023 following clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As violence spread from the capital Khartoum to other regions, El Gezira had remained relatively stable. However, the recent surge in attacks has shattered this perception, raising fears of further fragmentation along ethnic lines.

Witnesses describe armed groups targeting specific communities, forcing families to flee their homes. Human rights organizations have documented instances of abductions, looting, and indiscriminate killings. The United Nations and African Union have expressed alarm, urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians.

In a statement, the Sudanese army pledged to restore order in El Gezira and bring perpetrators to justice. However, the army’s capacity to intervene remains limited, as its forces are stretched thin across multiple fronts. Critics argue that the SAF and RSF have prioritized their power struggle over the welfare of civilians, leaving vulnerable populations at the mercy of militias.

The crisis in El Gezira underscores the broader humanitarian catastrophe gripping Sudan. Over five million people have been displaced, and food insecurity is at record levels. International aid efforts face significant challenges due to restricted access and security concerns.

Observers warn that unchecked ethnic violence could deepen divisions and prolong Sudan’s path to peace. As the international community calls for an immediate ceasefire and inclusive dialogue, the events in El Gezira serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for accountability and conflict resolution in Sudan.
