easyJet A320-200 Declares Emergency and Diverts to Madrid After Smoke in Cabin

On January 27, 2025, an easyJet Airbus A320-200 flying from Barcelona to London Gatwick was forced to declare an emergency and divert to Madrid after smoke was detected in the cabin. The flight, EZY8901, had been in the air for about 30 minutes when the crew reported the issue, leading to an immediate return to the nearest airport.

Passengers described a tense but controlled atmosphere as the flight crew informed them of the situation and reassured them that a safe landing would take place. It was a bit scary at first, but the crew was calm and professional, said one passenger. We could smell something unusual, but they kept us updated the whole time.

Air traffic controllers in Madrid were alerted, and emergency services were standing by as the aircraft made a safe landing. The plane touched down without any incidents, and passengers were safely escorted off the plane. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

easyJet released a statement saying that the safety of passengers and crew was the priority and that the smoke likely resulted from a technical fault. Our crew followed all safety procedures, and we are conducting a full investigation into the cause of the smoke, said an easyJet spokesperson.

Passengers were later rebooked on alternative flights to London. The aircraft involved in the incident was taken for inspection, and easyJet has promised to keep the public informed about any further developments.
