Kaizer Chiefs Defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe Transfers to Al-Ittihad for R15 Million, Leaving Coach Nabi Disappointed

In a surprising turn of events, Kaizer Chiefs’ center-back Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has completed a transfer to Libyan giants Al-Ittihad for a reported fee of R15 million. This move comes despite head coach Nasreddine Nabi recently placing significant trust in Ditlhokwe, especially following the suspension of Miguel Inacio.

The 26-year-old Botswana international joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2023 from SuperSport United. Initially, Ditlhokwe faced challenges securing a spot in the starting lineup, particularly after the club bolstered its defense with four new signings under coach Nabi. However, circumstances shifted when Inacio faced suspension, providing Ditlhokwe an opportunity to showcase his skills. Seizing this chance, he delivered commendable performances, even adapting to the left-back position when required.

Despite Ditlhokwe’s recent resurgence and the faith shown in him by Coach Nabi, the defender expressed a desire to explore new opportunities abroad. Al-Ittihad approached Kaizer Chiefs with a lucrative offer, and after discussions, the club decided to honor Ditlhokwe’s wishes. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. commented on the transfer:

It was not an easy decision for us when Al-Ittihad approached us regarding TT. We engaged the player, and during our discussions, he expressed his desire to move to Libya for further experience and opportunities. As a club, we didn’t want to impede his progress, and we appreciate his professionalism and discipline.

Ditlhokwe’s departure leaves a notable gap in the Chiefs’ defense. With limited backup options at center-back, the onus now falls on players like Given Msimango and Bradley Cross to step up. Cross, in particular, stands to benefit from increased playing time, especially after recovering from a recent injury.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi faces the challenge of restructuring his defense mid-season. While Ditlhokwe’s exit was unexpected, it underscores the dynamic nature of football transfers and the need for adaptability within the squad.

Transitioning to Al-Ittihad, Ditlhokwe joins a club with a rich history, boasting 19 Libyan Premier League titles. He will also reunite with fellow Botswana national teammate Tumisang Orebonye, who recently signed with the Libyan side. This move represents a significant step in Ditlhokwe’s career, offering him exposure to North African football and its unique challenges.

As Ditlhokwe embarks on this new journey, both fans and the Kaizer Chiefs organization extend their gratitude for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.
