TPLF Warns of Inevitable Ethiopia-Eritrea War, Expresses Concerns That Tigray Could Become the Primary Battlefield

In a dire statement that has raised alarms across the Horn of Africa, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has warned that an all-out war between Ethiopia and Eritrea is becoming increasingly inevitable. The TPLF, which was at the center of the brutal Tigray conflict that erupted in November 2020, expressed grave concerns that the Tigray region might once again become the focal point of a major regional war.

This warning comes at a time when tensions between the two neighboring nations, Ethiopia and Eritrea, have been escalating, with ongoing diplomatic disputes and an increasingly militarized stance. The TPLF’s concerns are not only rooted in the historical animosities that have existed between the two countries, but also in the ongoing instability in northern Ethiopia and the vulnerability of the Tigray region. The region was devastated by a brutal two-year conflict, resulting in a humanitarian crisis and widespread destruction.

The Ethiopian government and Eritrean authorities, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki respectively, signed a peace agreement in 2018 that ended two decades of hostility following the Eritrean-Ethiopian War. However, the fragile peace has remained tenuous, with lingering disputes over border demarcation, political tensions, and accusations of human rights violations on both sides.

The TPLF, which was once part of the ruling coalition in Ethiopia before it was ousted in 2018, has accused the Ethiopian government of fueling tensions with Eritrea in an attempt to create a broader regional conflict. In recent months, there have been reports of increasing military activity along the Ethiopia-Eritrea border, with both nations ramping up their military presence. The TPLF fears that these tensions could boil over, with Tigray once again caught in the crossfire.

As the region faces the specter of renewed violence, the humanitarian situation in Tigray remains dire. Despite a ceasefire agreement brokered in November 2022, many challenges persist, including ongoing blockades, insufficient aid delivery, and the displacement of millions of people. The TPLF’s warning highlights the broader regional risks, with Tigray potentially becoming the theater of war once again. Such a scenario would exacerbate the already severe humanitarian crisis and further destabilize an already volatile region.

The international community has expressed concern over the situation, with calls for dialogue and de-escalation from organizations such as the United Nations and the African Union. However, with little progress on the diplomatic front, the fears of an imminent conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea continue to grow. The TPLF’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in the Horn of Africa and the potential consequences of any missteps in the complex political and military dynamics of the region.

As Ethiopia, Eritrea, and the TPLF continue to navigate their strained relationships, the future of the Tigray region remains uncertain. The international community must act swiftly to prevent another devastating conflict and ensure that diplomatic solutions are prioritized over military escalation. The fate of Tigray and its people hangs in the balance, and the world watches as tensions simmer in this already war-torn corner of Africa.
