Anthrax Outbreak Deepens Humanitarian and Security Crisis in Eastern DR Congo

An anthrax outbreak in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is adding to an already dire security and humanitarian situation. Health officials have confirmed dozens of suspected cases in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, areas that are already heavily affected by ongoing armed conflict, mass displacement, and limited access to healthcare.

Local authorities, in coordination with international health organizations, are working to contain the outbreak, which has primarily affected livestock and people in rural communities. Many residents in these regions depend on livestock for their livelihood, and contact with infected animals has been identified as the primary source of transmission. The lack of veterinary services and public awareness has allowed the disease to spread quickly.

The DRC’s eastern provinces have long been plagued by violence involving armed groups, which has severely weakened the region’s health infrastructure. Roadblocks, insecurity, and attacks on health workers have made it difficult to reach affected areas, further hampering response efforts. Thousands of people have fled their homes in recent months, living in overcrowded displacement camps where disease can spread rapidly and healthcare is scarce.

Medical workers on the ground report severe shortages of essential supplies, including antibiotics and protective gear. The Ministry of Health, with support from the World Health Organization and NGOs, has begun emergency vaccination campaigns and awareness drives. However, the volatile security situation continues to hinder progress.

Public health experts warn that without immediate intervention, the outbreak could escalate, compounding an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis. They emphasize the urgent need for international support, not only to curb the anthrax outbreak but also to address the broader health and security challenges affecting millions in eastern DRC.
