Three Off-Duty South African Police Officers Found Dead In River After Nationwide Search

In a tragic turn of events, three off-duty South African police officers have been found dead in the Hennops River, approximately 70 km from Johannesburg, following a nationwide search that began after their disappearance on April 23, 2025.

The officers Constables Boipelo Senoge (20), Keamogetswe Buys (30), and Cebekhulu Linda (24) were last seen leaving a petrol station near Johannesburg while en route from Bloemfontein to Limpopo province. Their vehicle, a white VW Polo, was found abandoned along the N1 highway, prompting an extensive search operation.

After days of searching, divers located the bodies of the three officers in the Hennops River. In addition to their remains, two other unidentified bodies were recovered from the river. National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed the identities of the officers, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. He stated, We had hoped to find our three police officers safe, unharmed and alive, but this is not the case.

The cause of death remains unclear, and authorities are awaiting the recovery of the officers’ vehicle to aid in the investigation. Commissioner Masemola emphasized the importance of refraining from speculation until all facts are established. He assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine whether the deaths resulted from an accident or foul play.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the South African community, highlighting concerns over the safety of law enforcement officers. The deaths underscore the risks faced by police personnel, even when off duty, and have prompted calls for enhanced security measures and support for officers nationwide.

As the investigation continues, the South African Police Service remains committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Constables Senoge, Buys, and Linda. Their tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve and protect the nation.
