Police in the Eastern Cape have confirmed the arrest of four suspects in relation to the murders of two women in Gqeberha whose bodies were discovered in separate locations last week sparking outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against gender based violence authorities say the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated operation involving multiple units following leads that linked them to both crime scenes
The first victim a 32 year old mother of two was reported missing by her family days before her body was found in an open field in the New Brighton area showing signs of assault and possible strangulation the second victim believed to be in her late twenties was discovered near a construction site in KwaZakhele with similar injuries raising suspicions that the killings might be connected
According to investigators the suspects who range in age from 22 to 35 were known to police for prior offenses and are believed to be part of a local gang involved in a string of violent crimes including robberies and assaults forensic evidence including fingerprints and cellphone data reportedly played a key role in linking the suspects to the victims
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu stated that the breakthrough was the result of tireless investigative work community cooperation and intelligence sharing between law enforcement agencies she urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity adding that gender based violence remains one of the country’s most urgent social challenges
The arrest has brought some relief to residents who have been living in fear as a result of a recent spike in violence against women and children community leaders have called for better policing support services for victims and harsher penalties for perpetrators as part of a national response to what many now describe as a crisis
