I Don’t Regret Participating in #EndSARS Despite It Being One of the Toughest Times in My Life – Falz Reflects on Activism and Its Impact

Nigerian musician and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has expressed that he does not regret his involvement in the #EndSARS protests, despite the challenges faced during that period. In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo on the With Chude podcast, Falz emphasized that the movement was a response to the systemic issues of police brutality and impunity that had plagued Nigeria for years.

Reflecting on the early days of the protest, Falz recounted how he and fellow artist Runtown initiated the movement, expecting a modest turnout. However, to their surprise, the first protest saw a massive turnout, with the entire stretch of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos filled with demonstrators. This overwhelming response made Falz realize the depth of public frustration and the potential for significant change.

Despite the personal and emotional toll the protests took on him, Falz remains steadfast in his commitment to the cause. He noted that the challenges faced during the protests, including the violent crackdown on demonstrators, only strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for justice and accountability. He stated, I don’t regret participating in #EndSARS, despite it being one of the toughest times in my life.

Falz’s activism is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Influenced by the music of Fela Kuti and the activism of his father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, Falz has long been an advocate for social justice. He explained that his activism did not begin with #EndSARS but was a continuation of his lifelong commitment to fighting for the rights of the oppressed.

The #EndSARS movement, which gained international attention in October 2020, was a response to widespread allegations of police brutality by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protests culminated in the tragic events at the Lekki Toll Gate, where unarmed protesters were shot by security forces. Despite the government’s initial denial, a judicial panel later confirmed the incident as a massacre, leading to renewed calls for justice and police reform.

In the aftermath, Falz has continued to honor the memory of those lost during the protests. He has led memorials and vigils, vowing to ensure that their legacy is not erased. He stated, We will never allow our heroes to be disrespected with a shabby attempt to erase their legacy. We will always remember & honor their unmatched bravery till the last breath.

Through his music, activism, and public statements, Falz remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for justice and accountability. His unwavering commitment serves as a reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of standing up against injustice.
