Cardinals Gather in St. Peter’s Basilica for Final Mass Before Conclave to Elect New Pope

Cardinals from around the world gathered today in St. Peter’s Basilica for a solemn final Mass ahead of the start of the conclave that will elect the next pope. The Mass, officially called the  Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice or “For the Election of the Roman Pontiff,” marks a significant spiritual moment for the Catholic Church as it prepares for one of its most sacred and historic processes.

The ceremony, held under the grandeur of Michelangelo’s iconic dome, brought together over 100 cardinals dressed in crimson robes, a symbol of their willingness to defend the faith even to the point of shedding blood. The Mass was presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, who delivered a homily calling for unity, prayer, and openness to divine guidance during the election process.

The conclave, held in strict secrecy within the Sistine Chapel, is set to begin tomorrow. During the conclave, cardinals under the age of 80 will be locked in seclusion until they reach a two-thirds majority agreement on who will succeed the previous pontiff, who either passed away or stepped down in an unprecedented resignation.

As tradition dictates, ballots will be cast multiple times each day. If no consensus is reached after each round, the ballots will be burned with chemicals to produce black smoke, signaling to the outside world that no decision has been made. When a pope is finally elected, white smoke will rise, signaling Habemus Papam- We have a pope.

This moment is a deeply spiritual and pivotal event not only for the Catholic Church’s 1.3 billion followers but also for the global religious and political community. The new pope will be expected to address pressing global issues, ranging from social justice and interfaith dialogue to internal Church reforms and declining religious participation in some parts of the world.

Faithful Catholics from across the globe are watching and praying, hoping the conclave will yield a leader who will guide the Church through the complexities of the modern era while preserving its sacred traditions. As the cardinals enter the conclave, a centuries-old ritual begins anew, steeped in history, reverence, and the hope of spiritual renewal.
