Mali Cotton Output Falls 4.8% in 2024/2025 Season

Mali’s cotton production has dropped by 4.8% in the 2024/2025 season, marking a notable decline for one of West Africa’s leading cotton producers. According to figures released by the state-run cotton jcompany, Compagnie Malienne pour le Développement du Textile (CMDT), output fell from 630,000 tonnes in the previous season to approximately 600,000 tonnes this year.

The decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including adverse weather conditions, logistical challenges, and rising production costs. Farmers in several key cotton-growing regions reported experiencing irregular rainfall and pest infestations, which hampered yields.

Mali’s cotton sector plays a crucial role in its economy, providing income for millions of smallholder farmers and contributing significantly to export revenues. The drop in output is expected to impact not only farmers’ earnings but also the broader economy, which relies heavily on agricultural exports.

Industry experts are calling for increased government support and investment in improved farming techniques to cushion the sector from future shocks. “We need stronger infrastructure, better pest control measures, and more resilient seed varieties to sustain growth in cotton production,” said a spokesperson for the National Farmers’ Union.

Despite the setback, CMDT expressed optimism about the future, noting ongoing efforts to boost productivity and expand cotton acreage in the coming seasons.

Mali remains a key player in the global cotton market, and stakeholders are hopeful that with the right interventions, the country can bounce back stronger in the next farming cycle.
