Nigeria has emerged as a frontrunner in Africa’s transition to sustainable aviation by hosting a pivotal regional workshop focused on financing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiatives. The event, held in Lagos from May 5 to 9, 2025, brought together stakeholders from 14 African countries, including aviation authorities, project developers, and international financial institutions.
Organized by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in collaboration with the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the workshop aimed to address the financial and operational challenges hindering SAF development across the continent.
A significant outcome of the workshop was the inauguration of six Technical Working Groups (TWGs) by NCAA Director-General Captain Chris Najomo. These groups will focus on key areas: Policy and Regulation, Feedstock and Production, Funding and Investment, Technology and Innovation, Environmental and Social Impact, and Infrastructure and Logistics. The TWGs are tasked with guiding Nigeria’s SAF roadmap and ensuring alignment with global sustainability goals.
The workshop also delved into investment de-risking strategies, project bankability, and mechanisms for sustainable financing. Participants discussed the importance of robust risk mitigation frameworks and multi-stakeholder collaboration to support viable SAF production in Africa.
Representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), EU delegations, and other international organizations attended the event. Their presence underscored the global significance of Nigeria’s leadership in promoting sustainable aviation practices.
This initiative aligns with ICAO’s Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050. Nigeria’s proactive approach positions it as a key player in Africa’s journey toward a more sustainable aviation industry.
