South Africa Dispatches First 2025 Avocado Shipment to China, Marking a Milestone in Agricultural Trade

South Africa has commenced its 2025 avocado export season with a significant milestone: the dispatch of its first shipment to China. This development underscores the strengthening agricultural trade ties between the two nations and highlights South Africa’s expanding role in the global avocado market.

The shipment, comprising approximately 80 tons of Hass avocados, was cultivated by ZZ2, one of South Africa’s leading agricultural enterprises. The fruit was transported to Shanghai, arriving ahead of major competitors like Peru, thanks to South Africa’s shorter shipping routes. This logistical advantage allows South African avocados to reach Chinese markets during periods of lower supply, enhancing their competitiveness.

Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, lauded the achievement, stating, “This ‘early bird shipment’ to China is a testament to the hard work, innovation, and strategic foresight within our avocado industry.” He emphasized that such initiatives drive economic growth and job creation across the sector.

The foundation for this export was laid in August 2023 when South Africa and China concluded a phytosanitary agreement, facilitating the entry of South African avocados into the Chinese market. The inaugural shipment under this agreement arrived in Shanghai on October 8, 2024, making South Africa the third African nation, after Kenya and Tanzania, to export avocados to China.

Clive Garrett, Marketing Manager at ZZ2, expressed optimism about the Chinese market, noting the potential for growth given China’s increasing demand for avocados. He highlighted the importance of establishing strong distribution networks and consumer education to ensure sustained success in this new market.

As South Africa continues to diversify its agricultural exports, the successful entry into the Chinese avocado market represents a significant step forward. It not only opens new avenues for South African producers but also strengthens the country’s position in the global agricultural landscape.
