China to Establish Electric Vehicle Factories in Nigeria, Strengthening Strategic Partnership

China has announced plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) factories in Nigeria, marking a significant advancement in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. This initiative aims to bolster Nigeria’s industrial capacity and promote economic diversification through the development of its solid minerals sector.

During a recent meeting in Abuja, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration between China and Nigeria. He highlighted that Chinese companies are already active in Nigeria’s mining sector, engaging in activities from exploration to processing. The establishment of EV factories is seen as a natural progression of this cooperation, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s priority areas, particularly economic diversification through solid minerals .

Ambassador Dunhai also recalled the recent engagement between President Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This agreement paves the way for deeper cooperation in various sectors, including the automotive industry.

In response, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, expressed appreciation for China’s commitment to legal and regulatory compliance. He acknowledged that most Chinese firms operate responsibly in Nigeria but raised concerns over a few non-compliant operators. Dr. Alake emphasized the effectiveness of the Mining Marshals in combating illegal mining, noting that the initiative has improved awareness and compliance among both local and foreign operators .

The establishment of EV factories in Nigeria is expected to create jobs, enhance technological transfer, and contribute to the country’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This move aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy and positions Nigeria as a key player in the emerging electric vehicle market in Africa.

As the collaboration progresses, both nations are optimistic about the mutual benefits that will arise from this partnership, fostering economic growth and strengthening diplomatic ties.
