Rising demand for gold, minerals fuelling corruption, instability in Africa, others – UN

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has raised alarms over the escalating global demand for gold and critical minerals, highlighting its role in intensifying crime, corruption, and instability, particularly across Africa’s mineral-rich regions.

In its latest report titled “Minerals Crime: Illegal Gold Mining”, part of the Global Analysis on Crimes that Affect the Environment, UNODC delves into the complex dynamics of mineral-related crimes. The study reveals that organized crime groups, corporations, and individual actors are increasingly embedding themselves within gold supply chains, attracted by the sector’s high profitability and the rising value of gold.

The report underscores how these actors exploit regulatory loopholes, bribe public officials, and manipulate documentation to launder illicitly mined gold into formal markets. Tactics include declaring illegal gold as recycled, forging export permits, and misreporting the country of origin.

In Africa, the situation is particularly dire. Organized crime groups operate exclusively in gold, using profits to fund armed activities, challenge state authority, and fuel conflicts. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for instance, continues to grapple with illegal mining operations that finance armed groups and perpetuate violence.

The UNODC’s findings call for immediate and coordinated international action to address the multifaceted challenges posed by the illicit mineral trade. Recommendations include strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing transparency in supply chains, and fostering collaboration between governments, industry stakeholders, and civil society to combat the pervasive influence of organized crime in the mining sector.

As the global demand for gold and critical minerals shows no signs of abating, the UN emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable and ethical practices to ensure that resource wealth contributes to development rather than fueling cycles of corruption and conflict.
