Ugandan security forces thwarted a suspected terrorist attack near the Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine in Kampala, resulting in the deaths of two individuals believed to be affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group linked to the Islamic State.
The incident occurred as Uganda commemorated Martyrs’ Day, a significant national holiday honoring Christian converts executed in the 19th century. The event draws thousands of pilgrims annually, including high-profile dignitaries such as President Yoweri Museveni.
According to military spokesperson Chris Magezi, a counter-terrorism unit intercepted two suspects—a man and a woman—riding a motorcycle in the upscale suburb of Munyonyo. As security forces approached, the female suspect detonated an explosive device, killing both individuals. No civilian casualties were reported.
The ADF, originally a Ugandan insurgent group, has been active since the 1990s and is currently based in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks in the region and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
This attempted attack underscores ongoing security challenges in Uganda, particularly during high-profile national events. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
