Ethiopia: MP Alleges Eritrea’s Support for Armed Groups is Destabilizing the Horn of Africa

A member of parliament has leveled serious accusations against the Eritrean government, alleging that it is actively supporting armed groups across the Horn of Africa in a bid to destabilize the region.

During a heated parliamentary session this week, the MP claimed that Eritrea is covertly providing weapons, training, and logistical support to rebel factions operating in neighboring countries. He argued that such actions are undermining peace efforts, fueling conflict, and threatening regional security.

“These groups don’t operate in a vacuum,” the MP stated. “They are armed, trained, and emboldened by external forces — Eritrea being chief among them. This is no longer speculation, it’s a pattern of interference.”

Though the lawmaker did not provide concrete evidence during the session, his remarks echoed growing concerns among political observers and regional analysts who have long suspected Asmara of playing a shadow role in various conflicts.

The accusation comes at a time of heightened tension in the Horn of Africa, with several countries facing internal insurgencies, political instability, and strained diplomatic relations. Analysts warn that any foreign involvement in fueling unrest could escalate tensions and reverse fragile peace gains.

Eritrea has yet to respond to the claims. However, the country has previously dismissed similar accusations as unfounded and politically motivated, insisting that it respects the sovereignty of its neighbors.

The parliamentarian called for a formal investigation and urged the regional bloc to take a firm stance against any country found to be destabilizing the region. “We cannot build lasting peace in the Horn if external actors are allowed to fan the flames of war unchecked,” he warned.

The call for accountability is likely to intensify diplomatic scrutiny and could spark further discussions at upcoming regional security summits.
