Nairobi Moves to Restore Cleanliness with Dumpsite Closures

In a decisive move to address environmental degradation and public health concerns, Nairobi Environment Chief Executive, Maureen Njeri Mosiria, has announced the immediate closure of all illegal dumpsites across the city.

The announcement, made during an environmental inspection tour, is part of an intensified cleanup campaign aimed at restoring sanitation standards and reclaiming public spaces overtaken by unregulated waste dumping. Mosiria stated that the county government is committed to enforcing stricter waste management policies and holding violators accountable.

According to officials, the illegal dumpsites have become breeding grounds for disease, blocked drainage systems, and contributed to the growing pollution crisis within informal settlements and major urban zones. The city plans to increase surveillance and deploy enforcement teams to ensure compliance with the closure orders.

Residents living near the affected areas have welcomed the move, citing long-standing concerns about foul odors, respiratory issues, and environmental hazards. The county has pledged to support affected communities through improved waste collection services and awareness campaigns on proper disposal methods.

Mosiria emphasized that the fight against illegal dumping requires collaboration between citizens, businesses, and the government. She also hinted at plans to introduce designated waste zones and recycling hubs as long-term solutions to Nairobi’s solid waste challenges.

The crackdown on illegal dumpsites aligns with Nairobi’s broader vision to become a cleaner, greener, and more livable city, as environmental sustainability takes center stage in urban planning efforts.
