A growing number of women entrepreneurs in Kariba are making significant strides in transforming the local economy, with bold moves in tourism and manufacturing gaining national attention.
In the tourism sector, women-led businesses are breathing new life into the lakeside town, known for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. From running houseboat tours and eco-lodges to managing cultural experiences that showcase local traditions, these women are creating new revenue streams while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
“Women are no longer just participants—they are becoming leaders in tourism,” said a local official involved in regional development. “They are offering fresh ideas and ensuring the local community directly benefits from tourism activities.”
At the same time, women are taking on key roles in small-scale manufacturing. Using locally sourced materials, they are producing handcrafted items such as woven baskets, soaps, and jewelry. Some have also ventured into fish processing, packaging, and selling products both locally and across the region.
Cooperatives and women’s groups have played a vital role in this economic shift. In particular, initiatives empowering women in the fisheries sector have led to improved household incomes and increased representation in what was previously a male-dominated industry.
However, despite these gains, challenges remain. Many women entrepreneurs cite limited access to funding, inadequate infrastructure, and unreliable electricity as major obstacles to growth. Still, they remain optimistic and determined.
Local leaders have applauded the growing presence of women in the economic space, calling it a step forward for inclusive development and long-term sustainability.
As Kariba continues to rebuild its image as a key destination for tourism and trade, women are not only contributing to the town’s economic revival they are leading it.
