THE Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has so far paid wheat farmers more than ZiG$280 million for wheat deliveries, after receiving an additional ZiG$52 million from treasury this week.
GMB Chief Executive Officer, Mr Edison Badarai told ZBC News that the development follows a recent settlement of the Unites States dollar component amounting to US$33 million, which they owed to farmers.
“The Grain Marketing Board has received ZiG$52.1 million for wheat payments this week bringing total payments for wheat deliveries to ZiG$282 million and US$33 million which has since been cleared. The board appreciates the support from our parent ministry and treasury in facilitating disbursements of financial resources from the treasury. We appreciate the farmers for working with the GMB in ensuring a wheat-based food self-sufficiency,” he said.
The government has since set a target to plant 120 000 hectares of wheat this season to produce 600 000 metric tonnes of the strategy.
