Kenya’s Deputy Police Chief Resigns Following Outcry Over Blogger’s Death

Kenya’s Deputy Inspector General of Police has tendered his resignation amid growing public outrage over the controversial death of a popular blogger who was reportedly in police custody.

The resignation, confirmed on Friday, comes just days after the body of the outspoken blogger was discovered under unclear circumstances, triggering nationwide protests, social media uproar, and mounting pressure on the country’s top security officials.

Sources within law enforcement revealed that the deputy police chief stepped down voluntarily, citing the need to “preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations” and avoid further erosion of public trust in the police service.

The deceased blogger had been known for his critical commentary on governance and corruption, gaining a large following online. Reports indicate he was arrested earlier in the week, but his family and legal representatives claim they were not informed of his whereabouts until his death was made public.

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have since called for a full, independent inquiry into the incident, accusing authorities of failing to safeguard the blogger’s rights and alleging possible foul play. Protests have erupted in major towns, with demonstrators demanding justice and police accountability.

Government officials have promised a transparent investigation and assured the public that those responsible will be held to account.

The resignation of the deputy police chief is being viewed as a significant development in a case that has reignited long-standing concerns about police misconduct and custodial deaths in the country. As the investigation unfolds, attention now turns to how the government will handle public demands for reform and justice.
