Kenya Bureau of Standards Chief Returns to Office Following Suspension Over Corruption Allegations

The Director General of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has resumed his duties after being suspended earlier this year amid a high-profile corruption investigation. The reinstatement follows the completion of an internal audit and clearing of allegations related to procurement irregularities during his tenure.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, the Director General expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving the institution. He pledged to reinforce transparency, restore public trust, and prioritise the timely development and enforcement of technical standards across Kenya.

During his absence, the bureau faced criticism over slowed certification processes and backlogs in standards development. Stakeholders welcomed his return, noting the importance of experienced leadership in maintaining KEBS’s role in safeguarding public safety and enhancing export competitiveness.

Looking ahead, the Director General outlined a comprehensive reform agenda that includes improved procurement protocols, staff capacity building, and the digitalisation of operations. “We owe Kenyans efficient, accountable service,” he remarked, adding that tighter internal controls and whistle‑blower protections would form the backbone of the bureau’s renewed commitment.

The government has affirmed ongoing cooperation with anti-corruption authorities to ensure no misconduct remains unchecked. Meanwhile, businesses and consumers alike are optimistic that the restored leadership will accelerate KEBS’s mandate to promote quality, safety, and fair trade in Kenya.
