SSPDF to Launch Training for Riverine and Peacekeeping Forces as Scheduled

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has confirmed that training for its newly designated Riverine and Peacekeeping Forces will begin as scheduled, marking a key step in efforts to strengthen national security and fulfil international peacekeeping obligations.

According to a statement released by SSPDF headquarters in Juba, the training programme is set to commence in the coming weeks and will focus on preparing personnel for specialised operations in water-based environments and international peace support missions.

Military officials say the training will cover navigation, combat readiness in riverine zones, counter-smuggling operations, as well as civilian protection, conflict mediation, and adherence to humanitarian law under peacekeeping duties.

“This is part of our commitment to building a modern, professional army capable of safeguarding our national territory and contributing to regional stability,” said a senior SSPDF officer overseeing the programme.

The Riverine Force, which will operate along key water routes such as the Nile, is expected to play a critical role in patrolling remote regions, protecting trade routes, and deterring illegal activities on South Sudan’s waterways. Meanwhile, the Peacekeeping Force will be trained to meet the standards required for deployment under African Union or United Nations mandates.

Over 200 troops have been selected for the initial phase, with training camps set up in strategic locations in Central and Eastern Equatoria.

Analysts have welcomed the move, noting that riverine insecurity has long hindered trade and humanitarian access in parts of the country. Strengthening peacekeeping capacity, they say, also boosts South Sudan’s diplomatic standing and aligns with its pledge to support regional peace.

The SSPDF reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and professionalism throughout the training process and said it would explore future partnerships with international military advisors to expand capacity.

As preparations get underway, the programme is being viewed as a positive development in the country’s long-term security sector reform.
